As a young girl growing up in Chicago, if you had asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would always say I wanted to be a singer. In spite of every bad note I hit, every time my voice cracked, I knew what I wanted to do in life. But with no money to begin to formally train my voice, I set out on a journey to learn to sing.
During my journey, I was blessed to meet people who would help me shape my voice until I was able to receive formal voice training... when I was in COLLEGE!
As I grew as a singer, I traveled the world, spreading my love of singing with anyone who cared to listen, but I felt a shift inside of my spirit. Yes, I wanted to sing, but more importantly, I wanted to share my gift of teaching others to sing. For me, singing was never about winning awards or accolades, it has always been about the joy of music and how it makes us feel.
So, being asked to sing on The Today Show, I didn't look at it as an opportunity to showcase my singing abilities, it was an opportunity to show others that where they start is not where they have to end, that, even though it may sound cliché, dreams can come true.
