Hi, I’m Abram from 30 Day Singer and here are 5 ways to fix your voice after you have been sick.

1) Vocal Rest

If you are experiencing a lot of vocal fatigue, your throat is raw, or your voice is sounding raspy, then the first and most important thing to do is rest your voice for at least 36 hours before trying to sing again if possible. Our voice goes through recovery phases and if you are feeling sore then rest your voice when possible. Avoid raising your voice or talking too much. Vocal rest is just as important as conditioning your voice, so I try to plan in time for my voice to recover after big shows when I’m able to, even when my technique is in good shape.

2) Self-Laryngeal Massage

Lots of coughing can fatigue your voice pretty quickly and when you have been coughing a lot there is big concern that you might trigger yourself into a coughing fit while you are singing. First start to massage the muscles around your larynx and be particularly careful of the cough reflex right here where your neck meets your sternum. Still try to gently massage this area. Try to avoid pulling in air with your mouth or throat muscles. Breathing like this can tip any throat irritation over the edge and send you back into coughing. Focus on even and slow breaths that are triggered by your lower abdominal muscles. You can even practice trying to clear your throat with puffs of air from your vocal support instead of using any muscles around your throat.

3) Find your Resonance

The first singing that you do should start with some gentle humming. When the mouth is closed it helps us find resonance and relax our vocal mechanism. Try gently moving the back of the tongue up and down with your mouth closed. Opening and closing the internal space with your lips still together in a hum. The more resonance you find the more your head and neck will continue to relax. This will even help you clear any mucus around the vocal folds with less coughing. Try this with me a few times and listen for that ringing sound of resonance.

4) Muscle Isolation

If your voice is producing some ring and doesn’t hurt too much then begin doing some simple glide exercises. This will continue to clear your throat. More important is lots of coughing and straining will make your tongue, jaw, and throat hyper responsive and everything tries to move at the same time. Focus on isolating your muscles just moving the back of the tongue with Yah and the Lips with Wah.

5) Smooth out Voice Cracking

Another sign of vocal fatigue is a lot of voice cracking. Sometimes this is because the vocal folds are swollen from too much force or irritation. If this is the case then you want to go back to vocal rest and maybe even consult an ENT doctor.

In other cases cracking occurs because the tongue, jaw, and muscles around our throat are overactive and stuck with the muscle memory of a lot of strain. When ready to get back into singing, try gently sliding your voice from Ah to EE from chest voice to head voice and back. Try to relax your jaw and even though the tongue is moving, keep it relaxed in the front and move the back heel up and down without too much force. When you find your break. Reduce the volume and start sliding back and forth over the crack range tracing a C shape.
