The percussive hit is an essential fingerstyle technique, the chord shapes flow very well, the song uses two dominant fingerpicking patterns, along with many others, and all-in-all this song is a fingerstyle exercise in and of itself.

We begin with the intro. Before we learn the entire section, we spend some time focusing on the first couple of chords and the pattern. It's critical that we get used to this style of finger picking before we start getting into all the other chord shapes and fingerpicking variations.

We work on our finger placement, placing the thumb on the three thicker strings and each of our fingers getting one of the top three strings. In the song we often push into a chord - that means we play the play it a little bit early - instead of beat one, we'll play it on the + of four.

Once we've worked out the mechanics and gotten comfortable with the style of finger picking used in this song, we're going to be able to plow through the rest of it. We learn the rest of the intro and then practice it together.

The verse contains the intro but also has some other parts. We work through it bit by bit, taking time to practice the toughest parts and discussing every single thing as we learn this song note for note. Once we've practiced the verse, we play the entire thing together nice and slow. And then we make a tiny little alteration for verse two, just adding a single chord at the very end.

The chorus uses a lot of the same bits but we still need to take the time and work our way through it from start to finish before we play it together. Finally we have an interlude which is exactly the same as the intro, we just play it two times, and the outro which has an entirely different set of chords and finger picking patterns! While for the majority of the tune we use thumb and finger style, for the outro we use some arpeggiated patterns.

Finally, we discuss putting the entire song together. If you'd like to practice the entire song with me, there's a full playthrough available on my Patreon page, where I play through the entire song, start to finish. More information on that here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/63800132/
