I never do this. Matt Freeman AGAIN! Bass Teacher REACTS to Operation Ivy - “Bombshell”

This was unplanned, but holy cow I couldn't ignore the unanimous demands to check out Operation Ivy after hearing Rancid for the first time last week. "Bombshell" clocks in at 63 seconds and made me smile the whole time. Forget the vocals or the the guitar - bassist Matt Freeman is the FRONTMAN in this track. In this video I do another blind listen to the precursor group to Rancid, and talk about Matt's full-range walking bass lines (swiftly sweeping two octaves in just a few bars), how his phrasing and accents dictate the song "sections", and more. I also talk about what grabbed me the most: the ride cymbal and bass notes gel together the same way a bebop or a swing/jazz rhythm section would - just COOKING in sync at fast tempos. It's heavy jazz, the more I think about it...????????????
