Hi guys and welcome back to my channel.
My name is Kal Drako and I'm a professional drummer and educator.
On today's lesson I'm going to introduce you to the drum set. This is a very standard typical drum kit. I know you've seen all kinds of configurations probably with tens of symbols and 12 toms and all that but this is like the basic setup, this is what most people start with. So this is I'm going to start with this drum right here.
This is called the snare drum and the reason it's called the snare drum is because it's the only drum that has wires it's got snares underneath and you can play this two different ways. You can play them with the snares on and it sounds like this, or you can take the snares off, using this mechanism and you're going to have a very different sound with this one.
This is the tom. Most kits come with two toms right here, but a lot of people play with one tone like myself. I usually play with one tom, sometimes I'll use both. It depends on the gig I'm doing it. It depends on the style of music and the mood I'm in.
This is called the floor tom which is basically a bigger tom and it's usually either mounted like this one on a symbol stand or sometimes it's got little legs and they go on the floor.
This is the bass drum you play it with your foot.
Then you have the symbols. There is an infinite number and types of symbols. These are very classic ones, these are minol bisons. I love these symbols and I have my crash here, my 18 inch crash. I have my trash crash right here 16 inch, different sizes and this is my ride symbol .This is called the hi-hat. You can play the hi-hat either with your foot like this or with your hands.
With the stick it produces a very different sound.
Let's say you are about to buy a drum kit and you don't know which one to buy.
My advice is sit down, play around for a bit and if that feels good buy the drum kit. In the beginning I think it's too much. You don't have to worry about sizes and what kind of wood it is.
Just know that bigger sizes usually you play more powerful louder music usually and then smaller sizes you're probably going to play something lighter. So it depends on what you're listening to but if the setup feels great and the drums feel good to you just go ahead and buy them it's fine.
See you in the next one.
