In this lesson I take you through a logical approach to jazz improvisation in easy to follow steps!

Each step should be mastered before moving onto the next step as you will need that knowledge and ear/finger coordination.

For this lesson I have chose the old jazz standard 'When the saints go marching in'.

Here are the steps -

1 - Learn the melody - 00:00
2 - Learn the chord notes of the triads - 00:37
3 - Improvise on the triads - 01:14
4 - Add the 6 & 7 to the chords where indicated - 01:52
5 - Applying rhythm - 02:27
6 - Improv with rhythm - 03:06
7 - Leading notes - 03:43
8 - Scales - 04:20
9 - Approach notes beat 1 - 04:57
10 - Approach notes beat 3 - 05:34
11 - Approach notes beats 1 & 3 - 06:13
12 - Enclosures - 06:50
13 - Enclosures - 07:27
14 - Chromatic enclosures - 08:05
15 - Demo improvisation - 08:42

You don't have to follow these steps at all but I highly recommend (before trying to improvise) having a thorough knowledge of the chord notes, the scale relationships and be familiar with ways of practicing syncopated rhythm.
I like practicing this way as everything can be measured. You are not leaving anything to chance. You will have practiced many ways to get through the changes of the song you are working on using specific vocabulary! Applying vocabulary (in my opinion) only works really well, when you understand the chord changes/harmony. Just what has worked for me!
