Jazz vocabulary lesson
In this video I talk about two things really!
1. Jazz vocabulary
2. Learning to hear and internalise chord note changes
We look at my jazz etude on 'Softly as a morning sunrise' and also take a quick look at Clifford Browns 'After you've gone' solo.
Both of these items are taught weekly in my Patreon lessons. Check it out here - Tier 2

Learning jazz vocabulary is an essential part of sounding authentic when we solo over a jazz standard! But we also need to learn to hear and internalise the changes in order to be able to execute any jazz vocabulary ideas we have in the moment!
We (I) should never be trying to remember licks or phrases but simply listening and playing what we hear.
This is a technique that needs practicing away from developing vocabulary and learning chord changes. At some point, we need to (as Charlie Parker said) forget it all and just blow!
By practicing vocabulary such as chord notes, approach notes, scales, motifs, syncopation, articulation… as well as internalising chord changes, we can really start to develop as jazz improvisors and not jazz rememberers!
