This is my favorite lick from Contrane's Satellite. Love triad movement, repeating G note, and melodic Gm line etc.
It shows chord progression on the top and I put my perspective about what Coltrane was playing. Mostly following chord progression but there are some super impositions as following.
1. Bb7b9 on Ebmaj7 - this can be viewed as Ebmaj7 going to F#7 1 beat early too but harmonically it sounds more of diminished/melodic minor which in this case I normally see it as V on I thus Bb7b9 on Ebmaj7.
2. Db to D (b5) triad on E7
3. Abm ish bebop chromatic line on Bb7
The more I play these changes I get more freedom playing other fast songs. It's really worth to get some essence even trying in a slow tempo to see how we can manipulate harmony.
