As Clark Terry used to teach. - Imitate - Assimilate - Innovate
Many students take Clark's teaching as literally copying licks! I don't believe he meant this.
I believe he meant to copy the vocabulary and language that actually makes up a lick!
Rather than memorising licks and phrases, I believe it far more simple to learn the way I teach in this video!
If all you every practice is ii-v-i licks, that is all you will ever be able to play, but by analysing and breaking down licks into vocabulary, we can get so much more out of them!
