Shavo Odadjian’s beautifully-played introductory bass part on Spiders is a thing of melodic beauty. It was recorded in the band’s favorite tuning - drop C (G C F A D), but before you get to the bass line, it’s good to know how to hold a pick.
Put the pad of your thumb on the top side and the side of your finger on the underside. The pick should nestle into your finger’s first joint. It’s important to strike the string with the broad side of the pick to get maximum tone. Don’t choke up too far, as you want your pick to hit the string, not your finger!
Practice alternating between downstrokes and upstrokes and downstrokes alone. For a lot of heavier music, downstroke-only picking gives the bass line the weight it needs. Be brave, get a metronome and dive in!????????
