In this Eye Of The Beholder guitar lesson video, I will take you through all of this great song off of Metallica's ...And Justice for All album note-for-note.

The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E.

There are just so many great riffs in this one. James' writing for "Eye Of The Beholder" requires many rhythmic changes that can be hard to follow upon first listen. For that reason, it is a good idea to know this song well by listening to it a lot before attempting to learn it on the guitar.

It is a common misconception that James uses rapid downstrokes for pretty much any fast rhythm stuff that he plays. This is not correct. Even though he is probably the greatest down-picker on the planet, he does employ alternate picking in many of his riffs to achieve a different sound. That is what he chose to do in "Eye Of The Beholder". Not only does the alternate picking make it easier to play, but it also contributes to the more laid back sound of those riffs vs. the more aggressive picking styles of Master Of Puppets and Battery.

As always, I will go through each section of the song in the order that each appears on the original recording. It is another Metallica marathon with this lesson, clocking in at over 50 minutes.

For the harmony and solo sections, I will tackle the rhythms first followed by the lead guitar stuff.

Have fun with this one! Carl...
