Hi friends!
Today's lesson is perfect for beginners who are looking to gain independence in their hi hat foot.
We play a 1/8th note single stroke roll, with accents on the 1, 2+, 4. Underneath, we are driving the beat with quarter notes on the hi hat foot. Our goal is the keep the foot going without having to focus on it, as our hands play the contrasting accent pattern.
Notice that your hi hat foot lines up with the opposite hand, and not the accents. Practice this super slowly until you lock into the pattern. Then, get out your metronome and work your way up in speed, 5 bpm at a time.
Once you have this down, you can start to experiment with moving the accents to different drums or cymbals. See if you can play this pattern as a fill between beats, and work on a smooth transition from beat to fill and back.
