He got into college at age 10
His musical talent was so remarkable that he was admitted to the Conservatoire de Paris, an elite music school, when he was only 10 years old.
His parents weren’t involved with music
Debussy came from a modest middle-class family who had no connection with music. His mother was a seamstress and his father owned a china shop.
He worked with Russian businesswoman Nadezhda von Meck
Nadezhda von Meck was a wealthy patron of the arts and she hired Debussy to hold private gigs for her family and friends and to give her children piano lessons.
He didn’t like to be called an impressionist
Debussy didn’t want his compositions to be labeled as impressionist music by critics. He believed his music was different from what the other composers were doing in his time.
