Even when challenged with writing 'simple' music, Eddie still made it sound amazing.
There's a lot more going on in this riff than meets the eye.
The Echoplex before the amp.
The Flanger before the amp.
The muted open A string resonating underneath the other notes, creating an ominous drone, almost like a modern synth line.
The palm muting itself, which is so much easier to achieve if you use Eddie's middle finger pick grip.
While Eddie picked this with a combo of down and up strokes, I find all downs is easier for making each note thump.
It's a work of art, and it's so typical of EVH's rhythm playing: full of nuance, subtlety, expression and swing.
