We need to be able to play up and down the guitar fretboard with ease. One way to get good at that is to memorize all five of the pentatonic shapes. But that's enough. We want to have cool things to play in each shape when we get up there on the guitar fretboard. So having some classic licks in each shape is essential to mastering the guitar fretboard for rock, blues, and country guitar.
