Your ears are probably much better than you realize. If our ears weren't great at hearing and understanding music, we wouldn't be able to recognize melodies when transcribed into a new key or played with a wrong note. This is a skill even most non-musicians can do, and our ears can be improved by adding vocabulary to the concepts they already know.
