Marcus Miller @therealmarcusmiller redefined slap and funk bass with his deep mastery of the pocket and full-range tone. He was just 18 or 19 when he wrote Run for Cover, which first appeared on David Sanborn’s Voyeur album in 1981.

Look out for the percussive 16th and triplets that he uses to subdivide this E minor groove. It’s similar to the offbeat strums of a rhythm guitar or a drummer’s hi-hat. “I don’t really hear those fast notes as part of the bass line,” says Miller.“It’s more like filling in between the strong notes or accents with lighter ones, so you get a sort of sub-conversation going on.”
