Méditation from Thaïs is probably one of the most popular pieces for concert violin. Nonetheless, despite it's slow tempo and predicatble musical structure, it may sound like it's a whole lot easier than it really is.
Let's go over some key concepts to keep in mind when you're practicing this piece.
1️⃣ BOW CONTROL is incredibly important for this piece, given its need for seamless legato lines and precise dynamic expression.
2️⃣ Be very mindful of how you're developing your VIBRATO. Some violinists add a very sharp vibrato to the last few moments of a sustained note, which can sound jarring for this piece.
3️⃣ Remember that DYNAMICS are RELATIVE. Just because you see a Forte marking on the score, doesn't mean that you should play super loud. In the context of the first few phrases, "forte" really means "passionately," as opposed to "loud." Give the piece room to grow into a climax, as opposed to rushing it.
