Sing Better High Notes: Higher Does NOT Mean Harder

Pushing hard to get louder or higher notes is a common tendency for singers. And while it might temporarily work, it’s inconsistent and results in poor tone quality, pitch problems, vocal fatigue and strain.

Power and range, without strain, is all about controlling the breath and using the body as your support system (your diaphragm, intercostals, and abdominals should be working, not your throat).

Vocal coach Kurt Wolf explains that a singer shouldn’t push or use too much air pressure suddenly, or all at once. Instead you want to slowly build the energetic dynamic, gradually, over time.

To do this, use a smooth stream of air, even through the phrase, as you approach and sing your goal note.
