Our finger tips have about 3 thousand nerve endings per sq inch so are highly sensitive. This is an extremely valuable and often ignored sensory resource in piano playing. While it is useful to locate hand position on the keyboard by locating the black key groups...when it comes to putting the keys down cleanly we should try to avoid when ever possible feeling the sides of the white keys. This is the most effective way of knowing you are right on target and you don't need to look at your hands. The full contact by the finger tips on black keys can equally be felt. You may never have thought to practice in this way and it's fair to say it takes patience and thought (as all practice does).
