This young man, a member of a heavy metal music group from Belfast, Maine were just getting started back in 1986. I lived in the next town over and spent time with him and his fellow band members filming them in practice for a live battle of the bands performance they were going to give in a tent that evening. You can see other clips with other band members and a clip of the resulting music on my YouTube channel by searching the words "heavy metal".
Fortunately for me, his mom was present in the home and I asked her to participate with him in an interview. The result presents two completely different points of view of hardcore heavymetal music and its meaning and its as some sort, threats, to mainstream religion and a faith in Jesus. Hard-core bands were becoming extremely popular in the USA and around the world at that time. Black Sabbath. Iron Maiden. Judith Priest. Pantera. Tool. Death. Motorhead. Deep Purple. Guns N Roses. Exodus. And so many more.
I did not understand the music at first as I am from the folk music early rock 'n' roll music era which seems so calm relative to the anger and aggression these boys and some girls felt. I particularly didn't understand the heavy metal mosh pit. It seemed violent to me. But I like these young men and their honor and their honesty and their kindness to one another and people who disagreed with them and their musical tastes. They were going to do their own thing in spite of how anyone else felt and I admired them.
