The third single from Fruitless... is out now on all streaming platforms...

Buy the book of poetry now to get instant access to the full 1+hour album of music (writtenbydaniel.com)

Fruitless... is an album of music and book of poetry written by Daniel to music produced by Ogi Feel the Beat with art by Tanate Asami...

The story
A mask maker accepts that he will never earn an invite to the famed garden of immortals and begins creating for himself. But when the garden takes notice, he finds himself with one more opportunity to fulfill his fantasies...

The book
Includes a 90-page poetic story, illustrated by Tanate Asami, that weaves together the lyrics of the album into a sweeping narrative. It's a big collection (276 pages!) but breaks up nicely into 3 parts.

The music
Lush, complex, and ambitious in its scope, the 1+ hour of music is produced by trip hop musician Ogi Feel the Beat and performed by the poet to capture the rich rhythms of the text. (Some people have said how much reading along with the music has given them a deeper appreciation of both.)

Lyrics preview

And so, I’m at your doorstep...

a humble servant of man—
I ask a moment of your time...

I come to you without a shell or a mask...

I just want to tell you about the cells
your organelle chloroplasts are stored in...

I don’t mean to say
that we're no more than plants,
it’s just a metaphor for the fact
we soak up light emanating from screens
like they’re a solar blast
and use it as a fuel
to live, produce things,
construct seeds and stories
that allow us to explore
the vast scenes around us...

So catch me
before I'm past your orbit,

because I'll need to leave
and forfeit a bit...

You see,
all our best leaders inevitably become
whack and corporate,
the bullied become bullies...

The question is
do you use it as a fuse
or do you fuse with it,
becoming nothing more
than a metaphor for it?

My aim
is to get in
get out
smash the decor quick
dip
laugh at the corpse of old thinking
that sits in the morgue stiff
then act a fool, to wit,
to show a freedom of thought
and hop out the pool with legs,

an evolution from scribbles in sand,
the rudiments of glyphs on cave walls...

Last time no one could see it coming,
plus I hid the tools within...

but if I’m a snake,
I’d like to welcome you to the shed...

And this time I’m telling the truth

...trust me
I wouldn’t lie to you...

I tricked you once, why would I two?

Let’s put it all behind us now

so we can rely on a truce

follow me to the other side and I’ll prove

now’s the time to find room in your heart...

and let me in,
let me in to bring fruit...

And if I blew it,
at least I did it bright like lapis lazuli...

Even if they don’t weave me into the tapestry,
I believe that an invisible reach
is the true trap of speech...

It often seems too infeasible to be,
but many acts of cruelty
with enough patience
come back in fashion
(maybe fractioned and without a solid base)...

but wait...
and you'll see how metamorphic a performance is,
because if a man so torpid can morph in the mind
and transform his very own corpus,
built from the floor up,
I believe any one of you
can ditch the mortgages,
these chains to the fortress of time...

Switch the signature,
the chamber orchestra inside
is more formidable than you think...

For years, I poured my soul into the portico
only to miss the deeper portal within
that breaks the orbit of sin...

And this time I’m telling the truth

...trust me
I wouldn’t lie to you...

I tricked you once, why would I two?

Let’s put it all behind us now

so we can rely on a truce

follow me to the other side and I’ll prove

now’s the time to find room in your heart...

and let me in,
let me in to bring fruit...
