A look back at a unique project: At the Beethovenfest Bonn 2017, Oksana Lyniv conducted the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and the Bundesjugendorchester. The program, including works by Franz Xaver Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven, had previously been rehearsed by the young musicians in the Ukrainian city of Lviv. This music documentary accompanies the entire “Campus Project”, from the first rehearsals to the final concert of the LvivMozArt Festival at the Lviv National Opera; and from the continuation of the collaboration through to the final concert at the Beethovenfest Bonn 2017. The highlight of the final concert in Bonn was the premiere of the Galician Fantasy for seven accordions and orchestra by Ukrainian composer Bohdan Sehin.

Since the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops on February 24 this year, the musicians of the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine (YsOU) have been scattered in many locations both inside and outside the country, many having spent the first weeks of the war in bomb shelters. The male members of the orchestra are not allowed to leave Ukraine until further notice. Nevertheless, efforts are currently underway to bring the Ukrainian Youth Orchestra together for rehearsals in the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana as soon as possible.

The Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine was founded in 2016 on the initiative of Oksana Lyniv – after she had experienced working with youth orchestras in Germany. Since then, the internationally successful conductor has made it a priority to promote talented young Ukrainian musicians. This music documentary shows impressively how Lyniv’s dedicated work with the young musicians has led to their longed-for success.
