Composed by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, in 1930, "Nice Work If You Can Get It" was published in 1937 as one of nine songs the Gershwin brothers wrote for the movie 'A Damsel in Distress' where it was performed by Fred Astaire with backing vocals by The Stafford Sisters. The first jazz recording of the work was by Tommy Dorsey three weeks after the release of the film, with subsequent versions inclusive of Shep Fields, Teddy Wilson with Billie Holiday, Fred Astaire, Maxine Sullivan, The Andrews Sisters, Ella Fitzgerald with Andre Previn , Erroll Garner, Thelonious Monk, Sinatra-Basie, Art Tatum, Mel Tormé, Sarah Vaughan with Jimmy Jones, and Percy Faith, to name a few.
