Playing licks between chords is one of the coolest guitar tricks out there. It sounds great and it helps connect the chords of a progression with some well-appointed melody. In today’s lesson we’re going to learn how to play licks between chords using a four fret technique that’s both easy to do and works great.
I’ll explain how this technique comes together on the guitar neck, and why it’s something that can sound perfect when you want that classic “licks between chords,” effect on guitar.
If you’ve always wanted to learn how to do this technique, then today’s lesson will be pure gold. In it, I’ve included an easy step-by-step “licks between chords method,” that anyone can start to use right away.
This method involves moving along the neck rather quickly. So, my suggestion for you is that your ideal guitar to perform all the examples would be an electric. Of course you could try to use an acoustic, but string action combined with the string thickness (diameter) might make performing the examples more difficult.
The key for this guitar lesson will be “C” Major and the chords will include the primary “I-IV-V” harmony of; “C, F and G.”
I begin with a breakdown of how to apply the lesson’s “fret system” through the use of; “scale tone block patterns.” At the end of the lesson, I’ve included an example piece that mixes the chord & scale techniques together.
