Introducing polyphonic texture from the beginning stages helps students internalize the concept of independent melodic lines. The teacher can reinforce this by having the student sing one voice while the teacher sings another contrasting line. This allows the student to distinguish the separate rhythms and pitches that define a polyphonic texture before transferring the skill to the instrument.
