K클래식 돌품 세계 콩쿨 휩쓴 비결: 한예종 이강호 교수 대담

South Korea is becoming home to classical geniuses.
Pianist Lim Yun-chan , violinist Yang In-mo and cellist Choi Ha-young .... are just three of some 37 South Koreans that recently grabbed awards at international music competitions according to the Kumho Cultural Foundation.
Eighteen-year-old Lim made headlines around the world last week... as the youngest pianist to win the world-renowned Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.
Violinist Yang In-mo , meanwhile, became the first South Korean to win the Sibelius Violin Competition and cellist Choi Ha-young won the Queen Elisabeth competition.
Those in the classical circle are even calling it a "Korean classical phenomenon" praising young Korean musicians who are making their names known on the global stage.
For more on this, we Professor Lee Kang-ho from Korea National University of Arts joining us in the studio today. Welcome Professor.

1- So let's start off with you and your story.
We know that you are a renowned cellist yourself. Tell us what it was like to be a cellist in your time compared to now.

2- Then how has the industry or the atmosphere changed for young Korean classical musicians?

3- Like we mentioned earlier, Pianist Lim Yun-chan won the 16th Van Cliburn competition as the youngest pianist to ever win this competition.
First tell us about the competition itself.

4- So what does Lim's winning of this competition mean in the world of classical piano and to South Korea?

5- We heard that Lim got his classical education from Korea National University of Arts.
And of course, with you being a professor at the same university, how does it feel and what kind of a student was he while at school?

6- Tell us more about your school's gifted program which LIM enrolled into.

7- What stands out is that LIM received all of his education right here in South Korea, meaning he didn't get any classical education from overseas like some other musical prodigies from Korea.
How is your school's education system different from that of other musical schools or academies?

8- So K-classics or Korean classical music is gaining more and more attention on the global stage.
What do you think is behind the latest success involving younger generation musicians?

9- With all this good news though, what are some of the obstacles or hurdles that stand in the way of South Korean classical musicians? What are some of the difficulties that they face?

10- Then what do you think should be done in order to pull out those stops?

11- So where is Korea's classical music industry headed? What can we expect in the near future?

12- Are there any other young Korea classical prodigies we should keep our eyes on?

Thank you so much for your insight today Professor.
There seems to be a bright future for our classical music industry.
