My 'Quartet, no. 1' adopts the same experimental structure as Lejaren Hiller's 'String Quartet, No. 5' (1962) - a basic theme is followed by a more elaborate variation. While Hiller explores a serial procedure unusually based on quarter tones, I use the 'theme' to introduce some basic sound textures, which are then developed more fully in the subsequent 'variation' section.

There are, of course, four instrumental lines in the composition.

A similar arrangement as for the music holds for the visual accompaniment: the simpler 'theme' is illustrated by a modern painting and some of its details; while its 'variation' comprises of a more elaborate and developing abstract animation.
