You've been off the trumpet for 20 years and realized that coming back is going to be harder than you thought. No worries here's an abbreviated step-by-step process that you can follow to get back on track.

Step 1: Listen to Great Trumpet Players - Fill your mind with the sounds of great trumpet playing. This will make it possible for you to sound great down the road.

Step 2: Practice Breath Control - This will teach you to control your airflow and eventually make trumpet playing easier. A simple place to start is box breathing: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, exhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, and repeat.

Step 3: Blow the Leadpipe - This helps develop a steady airflow, warm up your embouchure muscles, and is the beginning of a sound with great core.

Step 4: Play Flexibility Exercises - This will help the coordination between wind and tongue. Without this you'll have a very hard time on trumpet in general.

Step 5: Practice Finger Dexterity - Use Clarke Studies to make sure your fingers are quick, firm, and precise. Casual fingers produce sloppy sounding trumpet playing so look out!

Step 6: Play The Music You Love - Remember to have fun and play music and make someone's day brighter.

This routine can be done in 20-40 minutes.
