In this step-by-step DIY project, guitar tech Marshall Dunn teaches you how to use a router to fit a humbucker in a P-90-sized body cavity.

PG’s guest luthier Marshall Dunn shows you the proper way to use a router—an important skill and an important part of this DIY project: swapping a bridge-position OEM P-90 in an Epiphone Les Paul Special with a Parsons Street Humbucker from StewMac. Watch Dunn as he, in his words, “converts part of a new guitar into sawdust and noise, then transforms the instrument by installing a totally new pickup in the bridge position—so we can retain the natural flavor of the P-90 in the neck, but goose up the bridge position with a humbucker. Watch him take you through the process step by detailed step, and offer a class in router safety along the way.

What you’ll need for this mod, besides a guitar, a small bandsaw for cutting the pickguard, and painter’s tape, can be ordered online at StewMac.com: a Bosch Colt 1 HP Variable-Speed Palm Router, a Bosch Plunge Base for the router, a Parsons Street Humbucker, a 5/8" Fisch Wave Cutter Bit, an 1/4" Amana Tool Carbide Tipper Router Bit, a humbucker pickup routing template, and a black humbucker ring. Working carefully and methodically, this can all be done in an afternoon.

Be sure to check out the before and after sounds in this video, to appreciate the unusual but very cool tones of a blended humbucker and P-90. And as Marshall points out, “learning to use a router is a great introduction to serious guitar modifications. It can be intimidating, but once you learn the basics, it opens up so many possibilities for modifications and repairs.” You can also find Marshall’s video for installing a Badass bass bridge in their channel or at premierguitar.com.
