Dr Dan shares his key observations and advice for singers experiencing COVID vocal recovery. He emphasises the importance of rest during the acute stage of the illness and advises against singing, as it requires energy that should be directed towards fighting the infection.
Dr Dan suggests that once singers enter the sub-acute phase, they can focus on re-establishing pre-infection lung conditions by taking short walks and using the Air Physio device to clear excess mucus. To address vocal fold health, he recommends over-the-counter anti-reflux liquid medication and cough suppressants. Finally, he encourages the use of SOVT (semi-occluded vocal tract) activities, such as straw phonation, to help the vocal folds recover before resuming singing.
