Rooster crowin’ at the break o’ day,
Smokestack risin’ where the hound dogs lay.
Mama’s bakin’, Daddy’s plowin’,
Creek runs strong, and the pine trees bowin’.
I was born with a ramblin’ mind,
Boots caked up with dust and time.
Ain’t no road that holds me tighter,
Than runnin’ down yonder holler!
Creek’s runnin’ cool, ‘neath the sycamore shade,
Frogs jump high where the catfish lay.
Barefoot kids playin’ tag in the dirt,
Mama calls supper, but we don’t hear.
Granny’s hummin’ on the old front porch,
Rockin’ in time to the Lord’s own torch.
She said, “Boy, don’t stray too far from home,
Ain’t nothin’ out there but skin and bone.”
But my feet keep tappin’, my heart beats fast,
Got a feelin’ this road won’t last.
I hear the hills, they’re callin’ me back,
Like a fiddle cryin’ in a lonesome track!
I’m runnin’ down yonder holler,
Feet flyin’ faster than a moonshine hauler.
Fiddle’s screamin’, banjo’s rollin’,
Bonfire burnin’, that backwoods soul in!
Mama always prayed I’d stay real close,
Said, “Out past them hills, the wind blows cold.”
But I got that fire deep in my chest,
A restless heart won’t settle for less.
So I took that road past the sawmill bend,
Saw new towns and made new friends.
But no fiddle tune nor city light,
Could hold me tight like them homegrown nights.
I’m runnin’ down yonder holler,
Feet flyin’ faster than a moonshine hauler.
Fiddle’s screamin’, banjo’s rollin’,
Bonfire burnin’, that backwoods soul in!
Years go by, I done my roam,
But somethin’ kept callin’ me back home.
Mama’s hair’s gone silver gray,
Granny’s porch still rocks the same.
That old dirt road ain’t changed a bit,
Still full o’ tracks where the young’uns sit.
Guess some things just don’t outgrow,
Like holler roots and a heart that knows.
Now I tell my boy, “Go on and see,
Find what’s out there, be wild and free.
But don’t forget when times get lean,
Home’s right here in these hills so green.”
I’m runnin’ down yonder holler,
Feet flyin’ faster than a moonshine hauler.
Fiddle’s screamin’, banjo’s rollin’,
Bonfire burnin’, that backwoods soul in!
Now the rooster crows at the break o’ dawn,
I wake up smilin’, right where I belong.
Ain’t got gold, but I got my honor,
Livin’ my life down yonder holler!
