From Screaming Trees' album, Sweet Oblivion, released in September 1992, this is track #5, "Butterfly." Screaming Trees were an American rock band formed in Ellensburg, Washington in 1985 by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bass player Van Conner and drummer Mark Pickerel. I had mixed feelings about Grunge rock, but very much liked this form. I first came into contact with Screaming Trees music, not by radio airplay or MTV oddly enough, but through a monthly VHS series I subscribed to during the early 1990's called Rock Video Monthly. Each tape profiled music videos by largely alternative rock bands and artists like Concrete Blonde, The Thrill Kill Kult, Spin Doctors, and Eve's Plum. On average there were ten artists on each VHS tape. I still own a small library of the tapes and they are in excellent condition.

I always felt "Butterfly" would have been a great song to have been featured somewhere on the film River's Edge (1986). But of course the film preceded the song by six years so that would have been an impossibility. This video is a kind of trailer of what it might have looked and sounded like had the song and movie been placed together. Also included is the haunting theme from River's Edge by Jürgen Knieper.
