Lessons and Carols is a service of worship celebrating the birth of Jesus that is observed in many churches during the Christmas season. The story of the world’s creation, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in several short Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books, and the gospels, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols.
The format was based on an order of service drawn up by Edward White Benson, Bishop of Truro in Cornwall, for use on Christmas Eve 1880. Numerous Christian churches throughout the world have since adopted this service, or a variation on this service, as part of their Christmas celebrations.
Permission to reprint and stream the music in this service obtained from One License with license #A-734385.
