This series of 10 groove lessons have come about out of necessity for my drum students who were wanting exercises that would incorporate and experiment…as well as take them out of their comfort zone of their normal practice homework sessions, and push them with the ideas and concepts that we were working on in drum lessons…use of drum rudiments (scales if you like) and hand technique, left foot practice…left-hand control, bass drum technique, independence, being creative on the drums and different ways of moving around the drumset.
There are many books and videos out there on this subject and this is just my take on it and how I get my students to expand their thinking and use what they are learning into their playing. It’s a creative exercise as well as physical. The exercises are not overly complicated and not meant to be played super fast. You can do that if you want, it’s more about how you SOUND. I feel you gain extra freedom and control from these exercises when you go back and play a straighter groove. That has certainly been my experience. I love a classic rock ‘n’ roll groove and maintain my practice at getting better playing those feels… think Earl Palmer and Charlie Watts but also enjoy every now and then a challenge and trying to think unconventionally on the drums. If you are into that this series may interest you.
