Concert Band
Grade 1
“Sí, se puede!" (Spanish for "Yes, you can") is the motto of the United Farm Workers of America. In 1972, UFW co-founder Dolores Huerta created the phrase during César Chávez's 25-day fast in Phoenix, Arizona. "Sí se puede!" is a federally registered trademark of the United Farm Workers Union. It has been widely adopted by other labor unions and civil rights organizations. It has drawn widespread political and media attention as a rallying cry during the U.S. immigration reform protests.
The work opens with a percussion rhythmic chant (Sí se Puede) that grows louder, later the winds join with a rhythmic motive of their own. The second section is folksong-like, while the third section is hymn-like. The work closes with the "Sí se Puede" motto returning to overlap with the hymn-like tune.
