Hi, I’m Abram from 30 Day Singer and today we are going over 3 different styles for singing “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.”

When singing Christmas Carols, it's important to gauge what style is most appropriate for the song and venue that you are performing at. Let’s review 3 different options you may pick and why.

1) Simple

The first style is our default simple style of singing. Focus on neutral vowels and very even vocal support. As you can hear little to no vocal embellishments are required. In many caroling situations this is the ideal style to choose as it's simple and endearing.

2) Pop/Contemporary

This style is for when you want to impress your crowd a bit more and sing with the current popular styles. Add some appropriate runs and a good number of scoops. The tone should still stay pretty smooth, but can lean toward being nasal or slightly brighter than our simple style.

3) Classical

Our last style is the most traditional way to sing Christmas Carols. This style fits best for a more formal concert or singing at a Church Service. Not every song requires a Classical style, but an older carol like this one often sounds better when sung a bit more Classical. For this style we want tall vowels, a good amount of pingy resonance and more vibrato throughout especially during sustained notes.

Focus on relaxing your larynx a bit lower and breathing in with a nice open AW vowel as your default shape. Make sure you sing with almost no R sound. Since this is a little less natural for many singers, take a moment and find that yawn space with a Buh or a Yah exercise.

Hark, The herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King
Peace on earth, and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With th’angelic host proclaim
Christ is born in Bethlehem
Hark, the herald angels sing,
Glory to the newborn King
