This song was born during a drive from Portland to Waldport, heading to visit Uncle Bill. It was written in a little house in Round Rock, Texas, where the car ran out of gas, and there was no electricity. I spent those days listening to the radio with an extension cord from an outdoor power pole, surrounded by a pack of Lone Star beers. It was a time when John Prine’s The Missing Years*, Neil Young’s *Harvest Moon*, and Tom Petty’s *Wildflowers all dropped.

The Texas connection was strong, with Austin City Limits, Steve Earle, David Allan Coe, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Joe Ely influencing the sound. It was a moment where country, Americana, and that free-spirited, redneck-hippie vibe came together. Those days in Texas were full of raw energy and heart, and they shaped everything I was creating at the time.
