Drum Student Surprises Himself with Drum Teacher | Stephen Taylor
Noah is a drum student that has been drumming for a few years. I have been teaching him since the beginning and while he plays the drums regularly at church, he is struggling with an all too common drum problem. We were both surprised by how much progress he made in this lesson. and the best part? He now has a system to work all of his drum fills through and integrate them into his drumming!
You would be amazed at how many drum lessons I have taught that focus on fixing this issue in a student's drumming. The problem is with his transitions. He can play the drum beat. He can play the drum fill. But he doesn't always play them with 100% success. Sometimes the drum fill is a little wrong. Sometimes the drum beat takes a measure or two to settle in after the drum fill. It's one thing to learn a lot of drum licks and drum beats. It's another to take the time to polish those drumming skills, refine your drumming, so that you sound like a pro. It is the little things in our drumming that set us apart from other drummers. We need to be able to play what we want to play, when we want to play it, how we want to play it on the drums.
Noah was at one of the recent Drum Camps I hosted at the SDS Studios outside of Nashville. During those drum camps, I do multiple private one on one's with each drum student. This drum lesson was taken from one of those private sessions.
Accidents can sometimes have fun results on the drums...but when EVERY drum fill involves accidents, they aren't accidents anymore. That are systemic issues in our drumming that we need to deal with.
