Welcome to my "Sound of Silence" Guitar Lesson + Tutorial, by Simon & Garfunkel. This easy 4-chord song is deceptively tricky once you take the rhythm into account! But I've come up with an easy way to visualize the timing. You will learn how to count this song properly, so you can keep your place in the music and play and sing it from start to finish!

The lesson begins with the four chord shapes used in this song (C, G, F, Am) and some basic switching tips that will help you make the transitions quick and smooth. We then take a look at the strumming pattern, which is incredibly easy - one of the easiest strumming patterns ever: “down down-up”

Then with our easy chord shapes and simple strumming pattern, we apply them to the entire song, breaking it down section by section. This song requires a lot of counting; that's the real trick here. The chords and strumming pattern are the easiest but the timing is what prevents this from being one of the easiest songs on guitar! But don’t worry! I have come up with a very simple shorthand way so that you can memorize this song fast.

After breaking it down section by section, we put it all together and then we play it together nice and slow.

Next we learn the intro melody which is insanely simple. You just have to hold down one note and pluck three strings. We figure out how to work it into the beginning of the song and then we discuss how to put the lyrics to the music because it's a little bit different in the third, fourth and fifth verses.

Don't forget to write out the form and listen to the original recording - that'll help you the most when it comes to playing and singing Sound of Silence!
