Drum performance filmed and recorded by Luke Oswald using Superior Drummer 3 from @Toontrack and e-drums and cymbals from Jobeky.

After a busy Fall/Winter, this is the first time I’ve sat down at my studio kit in almost 2 months. Rather than doing any preliminary practicing, I challenged myself just to sit down and perform with no prep while recording the result. This is also a new angle I’m trying out with an extra camera I wasn’t using. Oh, and I decided to bring back the Converse All-Stars for the New Year.

This is an improvised performance based in 16th note triplets and 32nd notes at 90bpm. The goal here is to keep the swung 16th note groove and fill flow going while always playing primarily in 16th note triplet patterns with some 32nd notes thrown in. The result is a lot of linear types of patterns and combinations, which is one of my favorite things to play. I’ve added a click for phrasing reference.

The drum samples used in this performance are from the Allaire Studios SDX expansion from the New York Studios Vol. 2 library for Superior Drummer 3. This is an older library but is one of my all time favorites. It is also one of the very first Toontrack libraries I ever listened to back when Superior Drummer 2 was first released. The drum mix is a custom mix created from scratch using the built in mixer and FX within Superior Drummer 3.
