This video shows the #1 most popular Rock song of each year. The years represent when the song was hot, not necessarily when the song was released.
The songs chosen were based off of Year-End Hot 100 Singles charts, Hot 100 chart performance. If necessary, Top Rock and Alternative Songs Charts, and Billboard Yearly Awards for Best Rock song were considered.

The criteria for what qualified as a rock song in this list was mostly Mainstream Rock. I was generally aiming for Glam Metal, Hard Rock, Grunge, and Heavy Metal. Alternative was only picked if there were no better options present. Soft rock, pop rock, and country rock were avoided.
Main criteria though was that a guitar had to be present, and was one of the main instruments in the song. Twenty One Pilots was an exception to this rule because their 3 major songs were close enough to rock. It was the 2010’s, there weren’t many other options.

It’s not that deep tbh. You know a rock song when you hear one.

Yes, “Shut Up and Dance” is a rock song. It just has a different mood than most rock songs.
