As my epic road trip through New England to try the best Indian food in the region wound to a close, I finished my adventure in the biggest way possible: with a thali! Join me as I enjoy a giant southern Indian thali in Woburn, Massachusetts!
Along with me on this Indian food adventure is my friend Chef Keith Sarasin, the chef and owner of The Farmer’s Dinner and Aatma Restaurant! We’d be enjoying a mountain of south Indian food at Godavari, a restaurant just outside of Boston.

This thali is called the Bahubali Thali, and it comes with 50 different items! Inside, it feels very southern and unique!
In the kitchen, we saw the insanely huge thali platter. We’d have chana, idli, rasam shrimp, biryani, tata dosas, angoori jamun, chicken lollipops, and so much more! The thali is so big and heavy that they need two guys to carry it to the table! It’s overwhelming in the best way!
We started with the chana, which had a nice spice to it. We followed that with aloo sabji, which contained some paneer and was very light. It reminded me of a yellow dal. Next was the bindhi, or okra, which was so good I went for a second bite!
Next was an airy chaat snack and some amazing orange dal. The shrimp dal was full of onions and contained perfectly-cooked shrimp. Next was the dosa with the incredible coconut chutney and the creamy peanut chutney.
Next, we tried the dosa with the sambar, which was even better than the coconut for me. I also liked the rasam, which was like a spicy stew. The mirchi pakora contained green chilies and went well with the coconut chutney.
The Kerala fried chicken had an amazing masala blend on it. The consistency reminded me of Chick-Fil-A. The chicken fry was also outstanding! The gobi Manchurian was stunning, and the chilli paneer was vinegary and dense, and so tasty!
I loved the spongy idli with the peanut and coconut chutneys. The thick semolina pongal contained onions and ghee, and the creamy goat curry blew my mind! The chicken curry was popping with flavor and had some spice ot it!
The saag paneer was light and not too thick, and the chicken tikka masala was also great. Next was the vada with the sambar. The mirchi bajji was great but filling, and the chicken lollipop was crispy and meaty.
The shredded paneer was down in a tomato-based chicken tikka sauce. We had 3 different biryanis and went with the mutton one first. It contained lots of clove and cinnamon. The uttapam was exceptional and had a sour, fermented flavor.
I also loved the parotta with the shredded paneer! The tandoori chicken was so smoky and the green uttapam was really aromatic. I loved it with the peanut chutney! The dal vada was a tasty, crispy veg fritter
Next up were the sweets, starting with the angoori jamun, which are small gulab jamuns. It was super sweet. The rava kesari was like a dense rice pudding, and the bread halwa was creamy. We ended with my favorite, ras malai. It was too good, but we were so full!
