MALCOLM FORSYTH CONDUCTOR
The Mill Creek Colliery Band is very pleased to have Malcolm Forsyth as their season conductor for 2002 – 2003. Honoured as Canadian Composer of the Year in 1989, he has earned international recognition as one of Canada’s leading composers. Born in 1936 in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, Forsyth majored in trombone, conducting and composition at the University of Cape Town. His career as a composer was launched when the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra performed Overture Erewhon (1962), and its success led to an invitation to write the Jubilee Overture for the orchestra’s 50th anniversary in 1964. In 1968, Forsyth emigrated to Canada and settled in Edmonton where he joined the ESO. He recently retired from the music faculty at the University of Alberta as Composer in- Residence, where he taught theory, composition and conducting. Compositions include Atayoskewin (Suite for Orchestra), a powerful portrayal of Canada’s North. It was hailed as “a masterpiece” at its premiere in 1984. It won his first JUNO for Best Classical Composition in 1987. He has won two further JUNO awards: in 1995 for Sketches from Natal, and in 1998 for Electra Rising.
