"It Is Well with My Soul" was written by Horatio G. Spafford in 1873 under tragic circumstances. Spafford, a successful lawyer and devout Christian, faced immense personal loss before penning this hymn. In 1871, he lost much of his real estate holdings in the Great Chicago Fire. Shortly after, his four daughters tragically drowned in a shipwreck while crossing the Atlantic. His wife, who survived, sent him a now-famous telegram: "Saved alone."

While journeying to meet his grieving wife, Spafford passed the location where the ship had sunk. It was during this time of unimaginable sorrow that he composed the words to "It Is Well with My Soul", expressing his deep faith and peace in God's will, despite the hardships.
