For Whom the Bell Tolls was first released on Metallica’s second album, Ride the Lightning, and saw Cliff Burton stamp his authority all over the emerging thrash metal scene.

After crushing power chords, Burton enters with a distorted bass intro that’s often mistaken for an electric guitar. The riff would become the benchmark by which all heavy Metallica songs have been judged ever since ????????
