POEM:

this is what falling in love feels like,
like writing you a poem.
I like to close my eyes and
write you a poem in cursive.
I think i understand you and we better 
when i shut my eyelids.
i know your waltz,
i can reengage your smile.
finding the worth in both our souls,
closing the shutters of the world

you tell me I have to trust my breath,
for the sake of the both of us.
my diaphragm cries
in the form of a breakbeat poem
all thru through the midnight hour.

and within each exhale
and retraction, God speaks
through metaphors.

He speaks through the luminance
of the city lights. Through the community circles
In the 2008s
and somehow if you could mix all that up,
old and new, it brings me to an image of you.

a paradox, how you hold so much
weight and are weightless at the same time.

the rain slow dances
on your cheekbones
in a way the sunshine
failed to.

maybe this is what falling in love feels like
being born and dying again
being born and dying again,
a subset of births and deaths
inside of a blanket wrapped snugly
around the time signature of your heart,

i would wrap myself in this blanket
a hundred times if it would mean
i could restore fragments
of my childhood,
sewing internal scars and
tissue into stories, tryna trace
back its lineage. back to the
sun and both of our mama’s frying pans,
reminding us that we were both alive once.
and make a vow, to carry out life like that,
when tomorrow never mattered.

and so I take that chance,
my heart is buoyant in your universe.
