“I Don’t Need To Know Your Name is a heartfelt love song… It’s so hard to write love songs without falling into the trap of being stereotypically cheesy or trite, so this song had to evolve naturally, instinctively. The lyrics work on the pretext that “when you know, you know,” so much of the surface stuff is wholly irrelevant in contrast to the depth of emotion humans can dedicate to one another.
I originally wrote the song inside out, starting with the solo section: the original studio version on my “Medication Time” album focuses around a beautiful 50’s style tenor sax solo from Roomful Of Blues maestro Mark Earley. I grew up listening to 50’s & 60’s music and have long associated my romantic instincts with those iconic King Curtis, Abraham “Boomie” Richman, Junior Walker, style tenor sax musings… They were all honoured through subsequent eras by players like Clarence Clemons (Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band), who always imbued those raspy, melodic vibes on everything they touched.
After creating a solo section that I could imagine slow dancing to, the lyrics started to come together. As a combat veteran of MANY failed relationships, the song hinges on the premise that new love can wash away each seemingly indelible stain of the past, as expressed by lyrics like “your eyes reveal a world beyond my pain.”
I still cling to the ethos that there’s not an emotional wound or scar that can’t be healed by the right kind of love. But we first need to believe in it in order for it to be capable of touching us (faith is the foundation of all genuine love). Just like in Peter Pan, fairies only die when we stop believing in ‘em!” - Todd Sharpville 2024
I don't need to know your name (sharpville)
Time reveals the future
And time can heal the past, every painful trace
I was drowning in deep sorrow
Convinced that it would last 'til I saw your face
Ain't it funny how a smile can tell you all your need to know
I guess it's time to cut the past and let it go...
I don't need to know your name to love you
Darlin’ I'm just glad you came, I found you
I don't feel an ounce of shame when I hold you
your eyes reveal a world beyond my pain
So I don't need to know your name
Feels like I crawled the driest desert
Swam the coldest sea just to chase that dove
Now you're quenching all my thirst
And warm my freezing bones with your healing love
There's times when we should listen
to the voices deep within
Put our hearts above our heads and let love in...
I don't need to know your name to love you
Darlin’ I'm just glad you came, I found you
I don't feel an ounce of shame when I hold you
your eyes reveal a world beyond my pain
So I don't need to know your name
Daddy always said no second chances
And opportunity, she don't knock twice
No-one ever spoke of second dances
You hit the floor and then I saw you melt that ice...
I don't need to know your name to love you
Darlin’ I'm just glad you came, I found you
I don't feel an ounce of shame when I hold you
your eyes reveal a world beyond my pain
So I don't need to know your name
Feels like those clouds been slowly lifting since you let me in…
