Travis Picking with a Twist: Adding Personality to Your Progressions

I'm teaching from my studio in Santa Cruz today about interior melodies and connective tissue between chords. I don't follow strict patterns when finger picking—I mix it up based on how I'm feeling, though I usually keep that thumb going on the bass notes.
For this lesson, I'm using a simple C-G-Am-F progression and adding embellishments. On the C, I lift off the B string first fret and play the second fret of the G string. For G, I use a pickup with open D, second fret D, and open G. On Am, I hit the low A string then create movement by lifting fingers on the B and G strings.
These repeating melodic themes make chord progressions more interesting. You heard my roots showing—early Fleetwood Mac and that classic 70s sound I grew up with. Check out jimmydillon.com for deeper lessons on these techniques. The Dillon family recently moved from Maui to Santa Cruz, and we're enjoying it. See you down the road!
