A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to sing this song at a graveside memorial service for a woman I never had the chance to meet. After speaking with and meeting her daughter who kindly shared a few stories, I wished even more that I had. I remember opening the inquiry message, and without knowing any details aside from the requested song and date, I had already made up my mind. I can only explain it as just seeming “right.” I replied right away, saying I was interested, available, and that I would do it. There was something, not only about the song choice, but about the whole thing that just felt… good.

That “good” feeling stayed with me as I tried to find my voice in the song and all throughout the service itself. It was such a beautiful experience, and I’m so happy I was invited to play a small role in it. Just another example of how our lives brush up against each other—intersecting, and yet changing us all with these shared experiences. Touching each other’s lives… briefly and yet significantly.

“Turn! Turn! Turn!” was written by Pete Seeger in the late 1950s, inspired almost entirely by verses from Ecclesiastes. I’ll admit that although I’ve known and loved many versions over the years—enough to sing along without thinking—the lyrics hadn’t quite hit home for me until I started rearranging the song for this. Or maybe sometimes a song’s meaning just lands differently when you’re in a certain season of life?

When Seeger adapted these ancient words, he created something that felt timeless yet timely—a reflection on how each season of life has its own purpose. Though he originally composed it as a protest song to inspire change, with artists like Judy Collins, The Lettermen, and later The Byrds in the 1960s, “Turn! Turn! Turn!” became a kind of anthem for transformation and resilience—a message that we still could benefit from hearing today…

Heraclitus once said, “the only thing constant in life is change.” I’ve learned to expect it—even if sometimes that brings hope, and other times, fear. It’s taught me that what really shapes our lives isn’t what changes, but how we handle those changes. It’s no easy thing…so let’s help each other anyway we can, and always offer kindness… Here’s to resilience and finding contentment in each of our seasons. Thank you for being here, and thank you for listening. ♥️ x

P.S. Happy (would-have-been 109th) Birthday Aunt Beth. Missing you today (and always)????.
